Psycho-educational and Full Psychological Assessments

We make every effort to tailor each assessment to an individual’s specific needs. At the end of the assessment, we provide you with a comprehensive report, which includes a cognitive or learning profile, relevant diagnoses, and specific recommendations. In addition, we outline any other areas of strength or difficulty that may impact an individual’s overall functioning.

We provide assessments for all ages (pre-school through to adulthood).

At the preschool level, a child may benefit from assessment if there are concerns with early development. Some examples include early language or social development, or behavioural difficulties (e.g., tantrums, dealing with transitions).

Children and adolescents may benefit from assessment when struggling in their academics, failing to meet their potential and/or falling behind expectations for their grade level. In addition, assessment may be beneficial where there are attentional, social, emotional, and/or behavioural concerns.

Adults may benefit from assessment in better understanding learning difficulties, which impact vocational or daily functioning. In addition, more comprehensive assessment may be beneficial in better understanding psychiatric difficulties and guiding treatment.

Assessments involve:

Intake Interview. For children and adolescents, the intake interview is typically completed with the parent or legal guardian. This is an opportunity to gather information which includes background information, developmental history, and the presenting concerns. A review of previous assessments or relevant reports (e.g., previous assessments, report cards) is also conducted.

Questionnaires. Where applicable, parents/guardians, and teachers may be provided with questionnaires to complete in order to better understand the child/adolescent in the home and school environments. For adults, these may be completed by a family member or someone who knows the individual well.

Testing. Testing is completed over 3 to 4 sessions, usually lasting between 1 to 2 hours depending on age and ability. Areas of testing include: intellectual abilities, memory, academic skills, attention and executive functioning, social emotional functioning, and adaptive skills.

InterviewsAdditional interviews and/or diagnostic interviews may be required with parents and/or teachers. In some cases, consultation with other health care providers who are involved may be beneficial.

Report and Feedback. A comprehensive report including all relevant findings, diagnoses, and specific recommendations (for supports and/or treatment) will be provided at the end of the assessment and results will be reviewed in person during a feedback session. We are happy to consult with schools and community agencies regarding any specific assessment recommendations.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with specific questions regarding the assessment process.
